Red Russian kale

Romanesco

Heads have pointed, spiraled pinnacles. Slightly nutty, and flavorful.

Collards

Endeared to southerners, collard greens have distinctive smooth and glossy leaves which imparts heat and cold tolerance and resistance to cabbage worms and loopers. Delicious steamed and are at their sweet tender best early in the season or in late fall after being nipped by a frost.

Green Kale

Lemon Cucumber

Mexican Sour Gherkin

(65 days) Open-pollinated. Also known as Cucamelon or Sandía de ratón (‘Mouse Watermelon’ in Spanish), and Preserving Cucumber in France. Tiny seedlings grow into rampant yet delicate scrambling vines covered with dozens of 1" green and white fruit that look like miniature watermelons but taste more like cucumbers, with a crunchy texture and a slight sour zing as if they already had been pickled. Botanically, they are neither cucumber nor watermelon and won’t cross with either. They don’t bruise and they keep for a long time. Try them in stir fries, pickle them as gherkins, or add to salsas. Easy to grow, and fun! Slightly more tolerant of cold than cukes, and more drought-resistant.

Pickling Cucumber

(52 Days) High-yielding, early, old favorite. Medium green fruits bear early, good color and shape. 3-5”

Suyo Long Cucumber

(61 days) Traditional long-fruited variety from China. A sweet-flavored, ribbed fruit growing up to 15" long. Widely adapted, grows well in hot weather, and sets early. Try using this unusual-looking cucumber in salads, for bread-and-butter, or mixed vegetable pickles. Trellis for straighter cukes.

Dark Green Zucchini

This dark green zucchini is perfect for home gardeners with superior flavor and excellent yields. Firm, tender flesh with small seed cavities, best picked at 6”. Wonderful thinly sliced, salted and used as a noodle substitute.

Yellow Squash

This straight-necked variety is early with prolific production of glossy-skinned fruits, straight necks and excellent flavor.

Italian Eggplant

Borage

Great border plants, full, tall and attracts bees. Bears beautiful, edible blue flowers that will turn purple and pink. Used in cough syrups and a good source of omega fatty acids.

Chamomile

This low growing herb with beautiful green, feathery foliage is productive ad produces beautiful and calming daisy-like blooms. Typically brewed and ingested as tea.

Sweet Alyssum

Cleome

Butterfly Weed

Blue Flax

Foxglove

Delphinium

Magnificent dense racemes make delphinium excellent in the border and as a cut flower. The name comes from the Greek for ‘dolphin’ and refers to the shape of the spur containing the nectar. Lupines

Raddichio

This round-headed radicchio is delicious in salads or braised. Commonly eaten in Italy and France these slightly bitter greens (or “reds”) are truly a tasty treat. Outer leaves will have a astronger bitter flavor but the tender, crunchy “heart” will knock your socks off! Plus, a little bitter is so good for you. Even if you don’t eat them they make a stunning ornamental.

Arugula

This delicious and spicy green will liven up any salad with its unique flavor. Easy to transplant.

Chard

Easy to grow chard will give you delicious greens and stalks all summer long. Break off outer stalks or cut, plant will continue growing throughout the season.

Red Lettuce

Large head with red ruffled leaves. Tender and sweet with almost no bitterness. Very bolt resistant and cold tolerant. Popular with market growers.

Speckled Green Oak Leaf Lettuce

Italian Basil

Basil is one of the most popular herbs we grow. This variety is fusarium-resistant, Italian large leaf which is perfect for pesto, salads and sauces. Leaves grow up to 4” long and are sweet and flavorful.

Thai Basil

A distinct, delicious spicy anise basil used for both its flavor and its dramatic color as a garnish.

Tulsi Basil

Tulsi Basil also known as sacred or holy basil is native to India and is valued for its medicinal properties. Often holy basil is found next to households to give divine protection. Used in Ayurvedic medicine to strengthen the immune system and to increase oxygen uptake to the brain. Makes a delicious tea.

Cilantro

Slow-bolting, cilantro is popular in Mexican and Asian dishes, indispensable in salsa and a favorite of ours in soups and salads.

Dill

Delicious and easy to grow. leaves and seeds are edible and flavorful, essential for pickling!


Curly Parsley

A favorite for flavor and garnish. Beautiful, deep green leaves. A nutritious breath freshener.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is delightfully fragrant and deliciously lemony. It will not tolerate Vermont winters but it does well if potted up and brought indoors. Used in many Asian dishes and soups.

Fennel

Crisp, juicy bulb type Fennel grows 3 feet high with edible blue green stems and feathery green leaves. Resistant to stressors and bolting. Great in salads, grilled, steamed or sauteed. Aids digestion.

REd Veined Sorrel

Bright green leaves with contrasting red veins, add beautiful color and flavor to lettuce mix. Harvest young as large leaves are tough.

Oregano

Did you know that there are over 50 varieties of oregano? This is the true culinary herb from Greek and Italian Mediterranean hillsides. Not only flavorful, Oregano is also wonderfully medicinal. Hardy, will sometimes overwinter.

Sweet Marjoram

A delightfully fragrant herb native to Turkey but popular throughout the Mediterranean. Ancient Greeks believed it brought peace and happiness. Marjoram is wonderful as a culinary herb but it is an impressive medicinal herb as well!

Stevia

Incredibly sweet leaves are a perfect herbal alternative to sugar. Used fresh or dried. Sweet as it is, it actually retards plaque and tooth decay! Amazing annual.

Watercress

Watercress loves water and some sun, easy in the garden or in containers. Rich in vitamins and a perfect addition to salads and sandwiches alike.

Thyme

Indispensable in the kitchen, used in soups, stews, roasts also known for its medicinal properties. Hardy perennial herb, even in Vermont. Thyme is wonderful fresh or dried and like all herbs, thyme has many beneficial health benefits.

Red Rubin Basil

Lime Basil

Lovage

A specialty culinary herb with delicious celery flavor, also known as “Mt. Celery” in France and Greece where it grows wild. Perennial.

Green Sorrel

Also known as ‘Sour Grass’ sorrel likes cool weather, acid soil, partial shade and water. Snip the lemony-flavored leaves when young. Perennial.

Purslane

You may have enough of these growing in your garden, but if not they are worth trying! Crisp and mild, even a little tangy in flavor they are packed with omega 3’s and add texture and flavor to salads

Rosemary

Wonderful Rosemary! An essential, aromatic and delicious Mediterranian herb. Rosemary is not a perennial in the Northeast but, it may be potted up and kept indoors for the winter.

Shiso

Not only is this Japanese herb a delightfully flavorful treat it is also rich in calcium and iron. It has been described as the “Asian Basil”

Sage

Known for its silvery foliage and for its flavor, used in sausages and stuffings, fresh or dried, medicinally used as a nerve tonic. 16-30” tall perennial

TExas Tarragon

Also known as Mexican Mint Marigold, leaves are aromatic and are a wonderful substitute for French Tarragon. It’s sweet delicate licorice flavor brightens salads and main dishes. It’s pretty, yellow flowers will bloom all summer long and are beautiful in salads as well.

 Medicinal Herbs

Ashwaganda

In Sanskrit it means “The Vitality of a Horse.” An herb of wide value, generally known as the ginseng of Ayurvedic medicine. Upright shrub grows to at least 2' with inconspicuous green-to-yellow flowers ripening to red berries. Roots are dried at the end of the growing season and used internally powdered or tinctured (other plant parts are toxic if eaten).

Bee Balm

Tall, spicy and fragrant with beautiful red flowers. Durable, hardy perennial plant that bees and hummingbirds love.

Calendula

Calendula petals have a tangy, slightly sweet flavor. Edible and can be used in soups salads and baked goods. High resin content for medicinal purposes - 24-30 inches

Catnip

Hardy perennial, thrives in poor soils. Cats love catnip and humans as well. Frequently used in tea form for stomach ailments, restlessness and fevers. There are even claims that fresh catnip leaves when rubbed on the skin is an excellent mosquito repellent! Catnip may be used fresh or dried.

Hyssop

Beautiful aromatic perennial border plant that produces spikes of indigo flowers, traditionally used in cough syrups. It also stimulates alertness and mental clarity, leaves are mildly bitter and may be added to salads, soups or stews.

ST. John’s Wort

Traditionally used as a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant and anti-anxiety, basically good for what ails you! May be found locally and blooms on June 24th, St. John’s day. Zone 5 partial shade

Tulsi Basil

Tulsi Basil also known as scred or holy basil is native to India and is valued for its medicinal properties. Often holy basil is found next to households to give divine protection. Used in Ayurvedic medicine to strengthen the immune system and to increase oxygen uptake to the brain. Makes a delicious tea.

Astragalus

Used in cases of exhaustion, food allergy or depression, and to improve digestion, and eliminate excess fluids. In his book Healing Lyme Stephen Harrod Buhner claims that astragalus can prevent and treat the many and varied symptoms of Lyme disease. Small yellow pea-like flowers on upright stems with vetch-like leaves. 1½–4' perennial. Plant in deep well-drained slightly alkaline soil. Harvest 4-6 -year-old roots in fall. Zone 4.

Borage

Known to herbalists as the Toothache Plant. Spilanthes’ tingling and mouth-numbing properties appear rapidly and last a while. Use its bronzy-purple leaves in salad or chew the leaves and flowers for temporary pain relief. Highly frost-sensitive annual. Used as a ground cover in the south, it adds unusual beauty with its low growth habit and its cute yellow flowers with rayless red-orange centers.

Valerian

Known as Nature’s Tranquilizer, valerian root is used to reduce tension and anxiety, alleviate insomnia, and relieve muscle spasms and cramping. Harvest roots in the fall of the second or later year. Avoid high doses for prolonged periods. Tall leafy 3–5' perennial with clusters of honey-scented pale pink flowers. Remove flowers to hasten root development. Plant in moist fertile soil about 1' apart. Zone 4.
